Lost encryption key: what you need to know

This is the most important article in our security help center. If you have lost your encryption key, or want to understand what would happen if you did, read it carefully: the answer is unambiguous, and it cannot be softened.

In short

Without your encryption key, your files cannot be decrypted or recovered — including by Everabyte. There is no reset, no master key and no back door. Support cannot bypass encryption.

Why nothing can unlock your files

Your files are encrypted on your device before they reach our infrastructure, with a key Everabyte does not hold. On our storage, your data exists only as ciphertext. Decryption requires your key: without it, the encrypted data cannot be turned back into readable files. This is the direct consequence of our zero-knowledge design.

What Everabyte cannot do

Everabyte cannot recover your data if you lose your key. There is no reset, no master key and no back door. Support cannot bypass encryption, and no request — however urgent — can change that, because the technical means do not exist on our side.

What depends on your configuration

Recovery behavior depends on the product configuration and account recovery model. If you use Everabyte through a dedicated or custom deployment, check your contract to see which recovery options are defined. In the standard zero-knowledge model, your key is the only path to your data.

What to do now

If you still have access to your key, treat this as a warning: create a protected backup now. If you believe your key is lost, contact [email protected] to review your situation — but understand that support cannot decrypt or restore your files in the standard model.
